Project Background
The Lively, an 18-story boutique apartment community located in the heart of downtown Jersey City’s vibrant Powerhouse Arts District, needed a collection of common areas that could wow the target demographic of young professionals attracted to the area.
Smart Spaces was engaged to design smart systems that would allow a first-time walk-in user to stream video and audio content and treat the spaces as their extended living space.
Management oversight was also a key requirement for staff to set audio, video, and lighting scenes from their on-premise central location.
Timers that shut down and start up the varied zones experiences based on the time of day, maintain the building-themed brand experiences, and manage energy consumption were also programmed to create hands-off simplicity for staff.

With a mix of spaces within the common areas located on the 18th floor, a blend of brands was needed to envision the amenities.
From Samsung TVs and Google Chromecasts for vibrant 4K streaming video, to Sonance speakers and Triad amplifiers & matrices for crisp, clear beautiful audio, to Control4 touchscreens and keypads to provide seamless self-serve control, The Lively took no shortcuts in order to create wonderful experiences for their tenants.
Control4 supports tens-of-thousands of different devices made by various brands, allowing a rich blend of the most attractive and quality products to be specified.
The Solution
Hidden Tech
To make the magic happen, Smart Spaces located all the equipment in a rack on the 17th floor. It was specially outfitted with cooling, a battery backup, and remote access for support to provide the utmost reliability.
The amenity areas themselves featured simple on-wall keypads and touchscreens, along with hidden speakers and other hidden electronic components.
Smart Spaces specializes in designs and solutions that are only seen and heard when called upon, allowing the beauty of the architecture and interior design to shine through.
